Vault of Midnight Wins Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award

The comic book industry’s most auspicious retailing prize has been brought to Michigan for the first time in the award’s history.

The Will Eisner Awards hold a special place in the world of comic books. Akin to the Oscars or Grammys for the film and music industries, the Eisner Awards are among the most respected accolades that the comic book trade has to offer. While the vast majority of recognition goes to the men and women behind the creation of the year’s best serialized comics and graphic novels, one category is reserved for the ones who put those products in the hands of readers and fans: The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. On Friday evening, Michigan’s Vault of Midnight was announced as this year’s recipient.

The prize is given out annually to the store “that has done an outstanding job of supporting the comics art medium both in the community and within the industry at large,” according to the San Diego Comic-Con’s online summation of the night’s proceedings.

This year’s field included stores from Tel Aviv, Manchester, Ontario, and numerous cities within the United States. And while two shops from Michigan found themselves among the 20 finalists for consideration, it was Ann Arbor’s Vault of Midnight that ended up taking home the auspicious award.

“We still can’t believe it,” said Curtis Sullivan, owner and operator of Vault of Midnight. “It’s obviously an incredible honor. Now we’re just ready to keep going, to keep improving. This changes everything.”
