Meet local superstar creator Simon Scheer and pick up a copy of his newest graphic novel, "The Buzzer!"

THE BUZZER
In 1985, the Alexander family moves into a quirky Florida town near Cape Canaveral. Andrew Alexander and his three new, strange friends stumble upon a mysterious radio station broadcasting an unsettling Russian message. In this historical fiction graphic novel, Andrew and his friends unravel the mystery of the radio and discover a horrifying truth behind the upcoming launch of the Challenger.

This comic is based on the existence of the real-life Russian radio station known in English as UVB-76, or “The Buzzer.” This station has broadcasted a steady buzzing sound every two seconds for over 30 years, which is occasionally broken by a coded message in Russian. Since its founding in January of 1982, there have been many theories explaining the purpose of the station. Some suggest it transmits military codes between high ranking Russian officers, and others theorize that it’s a “dead hand” station—potentially signaling the start of a nuclear war if the transmission is stopped.

It’s unknown who controls the station or where the current broadcasting location is.

Often known as "the guy with the hair," Simon Scheer has worn many different styles—from wavy cowlicks, to large afros, and most recently, a turquoise buzz cut. He's a 2023 graduate from Grand Valley State University, graduating with a bachelor's in graphic design. His interests, like his hair, span a very wide range.
